Helen Coates talks about the latest beauty innovations at her Crawshawbooth salon
Despite Helen Coates impressive’ portfolio of aesthetic and beauty treatment technology, she is constantly reinventing the business with the most current trends.
Recently, Helen has been busy with eyes and lips as she and her team have been training in the very latest techniques. From microblading and ombre powder brow to permanent make-up with eyeliner and even lip liner and blush – there’s so much to learn from Helen, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the industry.

MICROBLADE OR OMBRE/COMBINATION BROWS?
“I always tell my clients that it is all down to personal style and requirements when it comes to the different brow techniques. We ask all new clients to come for a consultation and a patch test. It is crucial that we work with the client assessing their hair colour, skin tone, texture and most of all their expectations,” says Helen.
WHO IS MICROBLADING SUITABLE FOR?
“Carried out professionally, microblading is a method used to create a very realistic hair stroke brow. It involves using disposable super fine needles to deposit pigment within the upper dermis to create the illusion of brow hair. A pigment refresh is required every 12 months. Microblading is perfect to enhance a full brow or correct and create a perfect brow for those with thin or patchy brows”.

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM THE OMBRE POWDER BROW?
“This technique is performed by a machine also known as micropigmentation or permanent make-up. It’s become really popular and involves building a beautiful brow by the pixelation of tiny dots. The pigment is inserted into the skin much like a traditional tattoo for longer lasting results. Its ideal for people who want a more shaded, softer brow. A colour refresh is applied every 12-18 months”.
TELL US MORE ABOUT THE COMBINATION OR OMBRE BROW?
“For those who can’t decide between microblading and ombre, this may be the preferred choice. It’s a combination between the two, hair strokes and powder fill for a really natural defined brow. No two clients will have the same brow shape and definition but the combination technique is ideal whatever brows you currently have subject to consultation.”

PERMANENT MAKE-UP: LONG-LASTING RESULTS
Helen is an expert in the application of permanent make-up and has seen a rise in clients wanting to have semi-permanent eyeliner and lipliner: “The new kid on the block is definitely the introduction of permanent lip blush.
Permanent eyeliner places pigment between the lashes with long lasting results. Eyes look defined throughout the day and night. No need to battle with eyeliner again.
“I am so excited about lip liner and blush,” Helen adds. “Many women notice as they age their lips appear smaller and paler, losing that all-important definition, lipstick doesn’t last and bleeds into the skin. We can apply pigment to create definition, shape and even the appearance of fullness.. The pigment can last up to four years and offers a much more youthful appearance.”
